WHAT DOES THE CHURCH TEACH ON THIS ISSUE? The Bishops felt so strongly about the sanctity of life that they listed it first on their Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching. They describe its importance and scope:
Catholic Teaching on the Life and Dignity of the Human Person: Every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, each person’s life and dignity must be respected, whether that person is an innocent unborn child in a mother’s womb, whether that person worked in the World Trade Center or a market in Baghdad, or even whether that person is a convicted criminal on death row. We believe that every human life is sacred from conception to natural death, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it protects and respects the life and dignity of the human person. —USCCB Administrative Committee, Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility, p. 13.
Holy Family's Respect Life Committee provides education and information to the parish community regarding the sacredness and dignity of all human life. It also offers opportunities for parishioners to become involved in activities to help preserve the sacredness of life and the human person.
If you are interested in being part of this important committee, helping to plan activities that parishioners can participate in, or if you simply want to become more informed about what our parish is doing to support this Principle of Catholic Social Teaching, contact Pat Bradley and let her know.

BECOME INVOLVED NOW!
1) Christians throughout Santa Clara County are invited to take part in the national 40 Days for Life effort from September 22 through October 31. In addition to 40 days of peaceful prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, please consider volunteering to pray outside of the Planned Parenthood Clinic, 1691 The Alameda, San Jose CA 95126 during the 40 days, and spread the word to others about this important life saving effort. To get more information, or to volunteer to help, please contact Pat Bradley at 40daysforlifesanjose@hughes.net or call her at 408-497-7270. All are welcome!
2) Confused by what is happening in the area of health-care reform? Want to be true to your faith? Remember that we are called to make choices based on an informed conscience. To help with that, the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops has created a Website (http://www.usccb.org/healthcare) which posts the USCCB position, bishops' letters to Congress, and (under "Get Involved") links for contacting your legislators and a list of what you can tell them that any health-care plan should contain. Look over the information, think about it, pray about it, then ACT!
3) Click on articles in the "Forms" section to read about various Respect-Life issues. Information+ Education + Prayer = An informed conscience, which our Catholic faith requires us to pursue.
